YOU, ON THE TEDx STAGE – A COURSE AT DEPAUL UNIVERSITY / FALL 2020

In this Fall 2020 Communication Studies course for students at DePaul University, Deborah Siegel shares insider tips and narrative strategies with students who dream of telling a story or sharing an idea on a TEDx-style stage. We’ll demystify the process of giving a TEDx-like presentation, from conception to application, and explore the world of TED talks. Students will either draft an application to one of the thousands of TEDx events taking place down the road (if they’ve opened back up again!) or create a 5-minute TEDx-style talk of their own, learning to tightly articulate an idea based on their own knowledge and experience while striking the right balance between personal hook and larger frame. If you are a DePaul University undergraduate, email Deborah for details on how to register.

WE ARE STRONG: A CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY

A Celebration of Community was a private event held at the end of 2017 to honor, with gratitude, Deborah’s personal community during a challenging year. There was music. There was a flash mob dance. There was lots and lots of cheese.

The event was held at Colvin House, an exquisitely restored mansion in Edgewater, offering both coworking and event space.

THE STORY PROJECT

The Story Project is a multimedia and collaborative initiative driven by parents and teachers that foregrounds student storytelling, counters the intensifying narrative that students are their test scores, helps students see that their stories matter, and maximizes creative usage of the school’s physical environment.

The concept is similar to that of StoryCorps, an organization whose mission is “to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and create a more just and compassionate world,”

A multi-month program designed for K-5 to help students develop active listening skills, social and emotional learning competencies, and strengthened peer relationships, The Story Project uses tested interviewing techniques to support students in the development of voice and identity, In a world intent on dividing, The Story Project helps students draw connections between their unique stories, their community’s diversity, and their individual and collective strengths.
